The assessment of corrosion requires that the measurements be spatially organized and representative of the actual corrosion on the surface of the pipe.

ASME B31G2.4 was developed to predict the failure pressure of corrosion defects. If the remaining pressure carrying capacity exceeds the maximum allowable operating pressure by a sufficient margin of safety, the corroded section can remain in service. If not, it must be repaired or replaced.
